Michigan Medicine, routinely ranked among the nation’s very best health systems and recognized as one of the best employers in the nation, announces an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished and respected physician executive to serve as Chief Medical Officer.
The University of Michigan Health (UM-H) Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides senior executive leadership for safe, high-quality clinical care, across U-M Health and its partners and affiliates, including Sparrow Health and UM-H West. The UM-H CMO role is the first system-wide leadership position since the merger between UM-H and Sparrow Health in April 2023. The CMO ensures medical care remains consistent with the mission and vision of the clinical enterprise through collaborative interaction with other U-M Health leaders and facilitates provider interactions with hospital administration and the governing board. The CMO reports to Dr. David Miller, President, University of Michigan Health (UM-H) and Executive Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, University of Michigan Medical School (UUM-HS).
In partnership with other U-M Health leaders and Regional leadership, the new CMO’s system-wide responsibility includes establishing the direction and priorities for UM-H in enhancing the overall quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare delivery across the UM-H enterprise. Other areas of responsibility are more focused on the UM-H Academic enterprise segments, which are based out of Ann Arbor. Areas that report through the CMO include quality and patient safety (systemwide), clinical informatics, medical staff services, accreditation and regulatory readiness, infection control and epidemiology, patient relations and clinical risk, care management, and capacity management through the Michigan Medicine Capacity Command Center (M2C2). Note that as the UM-H system continues to further integrate with its partners, some areas of responsibility may evolve system-wide.
As Sparrow Health and UM-H West continue to further integrate into the UM-H enterprise, the CMO will play a critical role in ensuring patient satisfaction and access to consistent clinical care across the UM-H and its partners, helping to establish and leverage clinical services lines across the entire clinical enterprise. The CMO will support the alignment of clinical care across the UM-H enterprise and further develop mature, enterprise-wide clinical services lines.

The University is also home to Michigan Medicine, comprised of the Medical School, its clinical enterprise, the University of Michigan Health (UM-H) and Michigan Health Corp., the legal entity that allows the Academic Medical Center to enter partnerships, affiliations, joint ventures, and other business activities.
