Education & Experience

• Licensed by the state of Maryland as a Certified Respiratory Care Practitioner by the Maryland Board of Physician
• Quality Assurance is required.
• Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required.
• Current CPR certification is required.
• Graduation from an approved AMA Respiratory Therapy Program is required. A Bachelor of Science in
• Respiratory Therapy is preferred.
• Two years experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required. Minimum 1 year Critical Care experience strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system, biology, microbiology, technical mathematics, and pharmacology are required. Proficient knowledge of medical terminology and operation and use of standard respiratory equipment and supplies, such as various types of ventilators, nebulizers, aerosol masks, nasal cannulas, and other oxygen delivery devices.
• Knowledge of respiratory diseases and standard treatments in order to assist in training employees. Knowledge of respiratory procedures (auscultation, administration of bronchodilators), respiratory surgical procedures, x-ray and arterial blood gas interpretations, and lab result analysis.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in communicating with patients, doctors, respiratory staff and nursing staff throughout UMROI, and in maintaining accurate and complete documentation of testing procedures.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Highly effective verbal communication skills including courtesy, resourcefulness and efficiency in answering questions, giving directions, locating staff and explaining hospital/departmental policies and procedures are necessary. Verbal communication skills may include communicating with an interdisciplinary team, patients, and families. Effective writing skills are also required in order to take messages and maintain miscellaneous records, receipts, reports and logs.
