Job Summary

The Transport RRT will provide safe, timely, high-quality care during the transport of all neonatal and pediatric patients, and patients determined by the transport medical director in need of transport. Initiate emergency protocols independently following ACLS, PALS, and NRP guidelines. The Transport RT role is integral to the day-to-day clinical operations of the Transport Team. This role manages complex neonatal and pediatric patient transports via rotor, ground or fixed wing modes, with particular attention to airway management. In addition, the transport RT is cross trained into all aspects of the transport team. Responsible for delivery of respiratory care to all patients, including therapeutic treatments, oxygen therapy, blood gas draws and analysis, ventilator management, airway management, medication administration per protocols and documentation as required.

Job Specific Duties

• Assesses patients in terms of clinical condition (heart rate, respiratory rate, etc.) and documents findings (Pre/Post therapy) in an accurate and timely manner. Provides feedback to physician(s).
• Ensures proper communication between physicians and families. Serves as a patient advocate/educator and provides family support and community resources. 
• Assesses, intervenes and reevaluates transported patients from newborn to adult. 
• Provides education to patients/families on the continuing plan of care to include medications and side effects; updates patients/families daily on Plan of Care (POC). 
• Using transport guidelines and protocols, evaluates each call and determines mode of transport based on patient and environmental factors. 
• Participates in departmental and hospital quality and performance improvement and safety projects. 
• Performs and tests invasive and non-invasive ventilators, initiates therapy, and monitors patient/ventilator. Ensures ventilator is working and documents equipment settings.
• Performs basic and advanced respiratory therapy for transport patients such as intubation, aerosol/ nitric delivery, airway clearance, and chest physiotherapy. 
• Participates in root cause analysis with any unplanned extubations or events.
• Performs all Quality Assurance on equipment and reports any malfunction. Removes equipment and documents if equipment failure impacted patient outcomes. Completes incident report and tags equipment. 
• Follows all Infection Control standards and ensures proper use of Personal Protective Equipment per hospital policy and procedures to ensure safe patient care.
• Performs proficient interventions utilizing advanced skills as defined in Florida 64J-1.006 and within scope of practice.
• Calculates medication dosing and assists with IV medications and infusions as needed. 
• Maintains professional growth and education including all required competencies and mandated in services/education.  
• Participates in Lean initiative to assess and improve processes for opportunities to deliver higher quality, cost-effective care, with greater customer service as measured by metrics. 
• Provides patient information and effectively completes hand off process to peers using SBAR. 

Qualifications

Minimum Job Requirements

• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) license issued by the state of Florida
• IVC - IV Certification
• American Heart Association (AHA) BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
• NBRC - National Board Respiratory Care
• Crisis Prevention Institute required within 90 days of hire
• American Heart Association (AHA) ACLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
• American Heart Association (AHA) PALS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program NRP American Academy of Pediatrics within 90 days of hire - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
• NPT-C Certified Neonatal Pediatric Transport required within 18 months of hire
• Active and valid State of Florida driver's license with an approved driving record pursuant to our policy and maintained throughout employment.
• PHTLS - Pre hospital Trauma Life Support required within 180 days
• FEMA ICS 100, ICS 200 required within 90 days
• Minimum of 2 years' experience in a clinical setting; pediatric specialty preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Associate degree in respiratory care preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of Spanish or Creole preferred.
• Ability to interpret, adapt, and react calmly under stressful conditions typical of an ICU environment.
• Ability to problem solve and adapt standard clinical procedures to patients needs associated with pediatric and neonatal population.
• Ability to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families, and peers.
• Ability to learn appropriate software application(s) used for patient documentation and medication administration.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Ability to react quickly to new challenges, unanticipated events, and resolve issues and address requests in a timely fashion.
