ABOUT MCFARLAND CLINIC

Today McFarland Clinic is Iowa's largest physician-owned multi-specialty clinic located in Ames, Iowa. The McFarland Clinic network of healthcare providers serves residents in 12 Iowa communities with additional communities served by physician outreach clinics. More than one million patient visits are made at McFarland Clinic annually, offered by more than 300 providers in over 50 medical specialties across central Iowa and 1,000+ staff members.

SUMMARY

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for clinical expertise for specific, complex and/or rising- risk patient populations with a design to meet specific contractual and program-related requirements.

This includes establishing, meeting and continuously monitoring established population health metrics, while maintaining alignment with the strategic goals and objectives of McFarland Clinic. The position’s major responsibility is directing the day-to-day provider activity, budgeting and financial management of VBC populations, and attention to regulatory aspects to ensure and facilitate an environment of patient and family-centered care. The CMO promotes collaboration between the leads of each medical department/specialty by coordinating the activities across McFarland Clinic to deliver an extraordinary patient care experience.

EDUCATION

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is required

Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or Health Administration (MHA) strongly preferred

EXPERIENCE

Board Certified practicing physician, willing to obtain Iowa licensure if not currently held.

A minimum of 10 years of clinical practice.

Population Healthcare experience required, specifically in supporting and/or planning, implementing and evaluating population health programs.

Demonstrated successful program development, change management, relationship building, and staff development in prior leadership roles.

Knowledge and/or experience in value-based medicine within the environments of accountable care organizations (ACOs), other governmental risk-based programs, commercial value-based care (VBC) arrangements, etc. including patient care coordination, quality improvement and transitions of care.

An appreciation for the administration and challenges within various specialties.

Assuring quality and financial goals are met with physicians.

Experience in developing and implementing standards of care within an organization.

An understanding of negotiating and managing VBC contracts with both regional and national payers.

Appreciation for the importance of in-patient out-patient transitional care processes and protocols to ensure successful care continuity, specifically in value or risk-based programs.

Advocate of process improvement and efficiencies gained through technology enablement pertaining to clinical operations, care coordination efforts, etc. and experience with implementing point solutions to enhance care delivery.

Excellent problem solving, change management and communication skills.

Demonstrated experience with financial analysis, quality metrics, patient experience, and process improvement.
