As supervised and delegated by a registered nurse, provides direct patient care in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice. In the critical care settings of ICU, the licensed vocational nurse provides direct, skilled nursing care under the supervision of the registered nurse. This includes collaborative participation in the elements of the nursing process to include assessment, planning, establishment of nursing diagnoses, implementation, and evaluation / reassessment. The nurse also provides for patient / family education and records pertinent observations of the patient’s response to the medical and nursing interventions performed relative to the plan of care. The position requires flexibility in scheduling and ability to work all shift patterns including weekends and holidays to insure continuity of care and appropriateness of nursing coverage to the patients of Parkview Hospital on all units. To provide for appropriate levels of staffing the Licensed Vocational Nurse will be required to accept call status during times of low census and be available to respond when contacted. The LVN is responsible for providing care to all of the patient population with consideration to age-specificity and diagnosis.
Under the direction of an RN, contributes to the assessment of patients by collecting data for analysis by an RN.Performs plan of care interventions, including specimen collection and wound care. May administermedication. Documents patient care given. Assists RN with development of plan of care. Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation. Monitors, documents, and communicates patient's status and reactions to interventions with RN, physician, patient, and families. Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
Current LVN licensure or application for licensure (with temporary permit) in the State of Texas. IV therapy education in theory and vocational application required.
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
BCLS required
ACLS required within 6 months of employment
Requires ability to function in stressful situations. Verbal ability to present information and ideas related to nursing theory and practice. Ability to accept responsibility and accountability to prescribe, delegate, and coordinate nursing care provided on assigned units as required with leadership qualities. The position requires the cognitive ability and vocational ability to provide nursing care appropriate to the patient population assigned, considering client age and diagnosis with full implementation of the nursing process to include Assessment / Reassessment, Nursing Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation. EKG interpretation and advanced monitoring skills required.
Previous experience in acute critical care hospital setting preferred. Requirements will include successful completion of orientation checklist, pharmacology exam, and skills / credentials / competency requirements of specific unit.
