We care for critically ill patients who have experienced myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and irregular rhythms. Our nationally recognized team of Heart and Vascular experts use a number of innovative evidence-based therapies and practices to assist patients in recovery. Cardiac nursing is an incredibly intensive environment; nurses are on the frontline of saving lives every day. Barnes-Jewish is consistently ranked as one of the top cardiac hospitals in the country, and performs the region’s highest volumes of heart procedures, which results in superior outcomes for cardiac patients. Nurses are exposed to technological advancements and an acute patient population on the Washington University Medical Campus. Nursing practices and leadership abilities are taken to the highest level possible.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
The Cardiac ICU (CICU) or Coronary ICU (CCU) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a 15-bed intensive care unit that specializes in the care of patients experiencing cardiogenic shock, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrythmias, and cardiac arrest, among other diagnoses. The CICU nursing staff are highly skilled in the care for critically ill patients, and are trained to specialize in the care of specific devices, such as Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Impella, and Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD), along with critical care lines and interventions such as Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, central lines, ventilators, dialysis, and targeted temperature management.
Our CICU team consists of Cardiology Attendings, Fellows, Residents, Registered Nurses, Pharmacists, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, Respiratory Therapists, Case Managers, and Social Workers. Our comprehensive multidisciplinary approach ensures we are taking the most excellent care of our patients and their families. Nurse to patient ratios are usually 1:2 or 1:1, depending on acuity.
Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.
