Duke Nursing Highlights:
Summary Perform a variety of nonprofessional nursing duties inthe direct careof patients under the directsupervision of an RN/LPN. WorkPerformed Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific proc edures andprovide manual assistance asrequired. Obtain and record patien tdata for medical records noting and informing RN/LPN of informationcoll ected. Administer treatment and personalcare proceduresto patients inc luding, but not limited to, feeding, bathing, shaving,changing clothing,cleaning andtrimming fingernails, bedmaking, assisting with ambulation, enemas,skin care, and bowel and bladderelimination; provide such additi onal care as required to meet thepersonal needs and comfort ofassigned p atients. Participate inteaching activities by reinforcing teaching inst ructed by RN and/orphysician as needed. Assist physician and nurses wi thphysicalexaminations by helping position patients, changing non-steril edressing and weighing patients. Noteand reports any changes in patient' scondition.Take and records vital signs, record I&O,applies ice bags ,administer douches and enemas.Turn andpositions patients, set up and fe edpatients as necessary, providepatients with fresh drinking water. Perf orm fingersticks forblood glucose testing with appropriate training. Ass ist withadmission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Followstan dard precautions and use personal protective equipment asrequired. Perf orm other related duties incidental to the workdescribed herein. Collect, deliver and conduct routine testson patient specimens. Clean assigne darea; stock and replenishsupplies and equipment as required. Participa te in ownprofessional development by maintaining required skills validat ion andattending educational offerings.Supports the development of other staff and formal learners. Perform other related dutiesincidental toth e work described herein. The following may beperformed as determinedby the individual DUHS entity: Steriledressing change for wounds over48hours old, IV fluid assistanceactivities,oral/nasogastric feedingand urina rycatherizations/irrigation. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities *Workingknowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures thatare applicable toworkp erformed. *Working knowledge of proceduresand techniques involvedin admi nistering routine and special treatmentsto patients. *Workingknowledge o f sanitation, personal hygieneand basic health and safety precautions ap plicable to work in ahospital.*Working knowledge of the organization and physicallayout of the hospital. *Working knowledge of infectioncontrolp rocedures and safety precautions. *Able to withstand prolongedstanding a nd walking with the ability to move orlift at least 50pounds.*Ability t o understand and follow oral and writteninstructions. * Abilityto docume nt and communicate pertinentinformation. *Ability to establishand mainta in effective workingrelationships with patients and hospital staff.*Work ingknowledgeof principles and practices of providing non-professional be dsidepatient care. Completion of a Level I - Nurse Aide education program approved by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or successful completion of the NC - approved Nurse Aide I competency test. High School diploma or equivalent required.
Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NAI) with the Division of Facility Services with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment.
