The EP Lab at Duke University Hospital is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time.The clinical nurse assists the physician with EP studies involving a diagnostic procedure that produces a complex 3-D mapping of the electrical activity in the heart. The nurse also assists the physician with treatments that include implantable devices such as PPMs and ICDs as well as cardiac /radiofrequency ablations.ICU/Cardiac and/or EP Lab experience strongly preferred.
Work Hours & Shifts:
Full Time: Four 10-hour day shifts per week with occasional evening hours as needed to complete cases. No nights, weekends or holidays!
Occ Summary Work PerformedKnowledge, Skills and Ab ilitiesLevel CharacteristicsAssists physicians in diagnosing and treatin g cardiac and peripheralvascular disease and cardiacarrhythmias in the C ath/EP Lab specializing in the care of patientsundergoing PTCA, stent pl acement,IABP placement and EP devices and ablations. With increased expe rienceprovides resource andmentoring to new staff while exhibiting enhan ced technical skills.Assist the physician during invasive and noninvasiv e procedures totreat cardiac and peripheralvascular disease and cardiac arrhythmias. Maintain high standards toachieve quality patient care.Comm unicates continuously with the physician about the patient#scondition.- May perform any of the following:# Basic diagnostic catheterization proc edures on adult patientswith knownand suspected congenital and acquired cardiac and peripheralvascular disease.# Basic interventional procedures which may include any of thefollowing: PTCA, stentprep andplacement, IA BP placement and operation # Basic EP procedure mayinclude any of thefol lowing; EPstudies, implantation of pacemaker, ICD, BIV ICD and ablations .Procedural requirements: Room preparation and breakdown to includestock ing rooms, daily QCchecks,radiographic, hemodynamic and computer setup, and room cleanup. Preparesterile procedure trayand patient sterile field appropriately for specified procedure type.Evaluate the status of the p atient during the procedure; provide ageand gender specific care, prepac cess site according to lab standard practice, and perform EKG leadplacem ent, blood pressureandpulse oximetry setup for hemodynamic monitoring.A cquire and accurately document pertinent patient data in theelectronic h ealth record and enter intohemodynamicand X-ray systems.Operates all ph ysiologic and radiographic equipment safetly andcorrectly. Assesses proc edure roomfor equipment functioning and readiness. Obtains supplies fori ndividual cases and ensures allappropriate needs of the Cardiac Cath Lab oratory team are met. Observeoccupational and radiationsafety regulation s (wearing badges, lead aprons, goggles, gloves)Educate the patient of p rocedure expectations before, during and afterthe procedure including p ost-procedural limitations and restrictions.Participates in perfomance i mprovement and continuous qualityimprovement activities.EKG recognition. Provide emergency care, EKG recognition.Ability to communication with pa tients, physicians, healthcare team.- The ability to operate radio/conso le equipment and transmitinformation generally acquired through ahigh sc hool education. A graduate of an associate or baccalaureate academic program in health science (including, but not limited to, cardiovascular technology, ultrasound,radiologic technology, or respiratory therapy) Or A graduate of an associate or baccalaureate academic program in an unrelated field along with graduation from a certificate program in cardiovascular technology, ultrasound, radiology technology or respiratory.
Level II: One year of experience as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist plus ladder requirements Provisional II Status: External hires into the CVIS II must meet the ladder requirementswithin one year of hire. Level III: Two years of experience as a Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist plus ladder requirements Provisional III Status: External hires into the CVIS III must be approved by DUHS Cardiac Catheterization and ElectrophysiologyLabs Operations Leaders. If approved, ladder requirements must be met within one year of hire.
Level II: RCIS, RCES, ARRT - RTR, ARRT - Radiography (R), ARRT - Cardiac Interventional Radiography (CI) , ARRT - Cardiovascular Interventional Radiography (CV), ARRT - Vascular Interventional Radiography (VI) or IBHRE certification within 36 months of employment. Basic Life Support Certification required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification required within 6 months of employment (Adult Cath, Adult EP, & Hybrid OR only). Duke employees in the CVIS job classification as of January 1, 2016 who were not eligible for certification will be exempt from the certification requirements of the CVIS II.
