Serves as the technical expert and provides day-to-day supervision of Phlebotomy and/or Receiving and
Processing areas. Responsible and accountable for performing a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the Geisinger Health System and Geisinger Medical Laboratories' clients. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinical areas. Promotes standardization through collaboration and coordination within a specialty.
Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
Works under the supervision and administrative direction of the Supervisor, Team Leader, or Operations Director.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Demonstrates proficiency in use of personal computers.
Demonstrates effective organizational and communication skills.
Demonstrates knowledge of the techniques and procedures of the phlebotomy and/or receiving and processing areas of the Geisinger Medical Laboratories.
Demonstrates the ability to interact positively with people and be able to manage human resources.
Demonstrates a high level of service commitment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Associate's degree with two years Phlebotomy or combined Phlebotomy and Receiving and Processing experience or a minimum of five years Phlebotomy or combined Phlebotomy and Receiving and Processing experience required.
Certification as a phlebotomy technician from a nationally recognized agency, i.e., American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel (NCA) required.
Equivalent training or experience to perform functions of the position may substitute for certification.
Three months to become familiar with all aspects of the position required.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed in a laboratory environment. Possible exposure to infectious diseases. May handle hazardous chemicals. Must comply with applicable safety procedures. Standing - remaining on one's feet in an upright position. Sitting - maintaining concentration while sitting for prolonged periods. Handling - seizing, holding, grasping, or otherwise working with hands. Fingering - picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers. Vision requirements - able to pass standardized color vision test. Must wear protective equipment (as required by test performed) - eye protection, face protection, lab coat, non-sterile medical gloves.
